Whole Assam people are gearing up to celebrate Magh Bihu

Magh Bihu also called Bhogali Bihu, is celebrated in the Month of January 14, 15 every year, also known as Makar Sankranti. The celebration of Magh Bihu starts with Uruka night, on this night, people stay awake the entire night near a bonfire. Magh Bihu is a time for the Assamese Community to come together and celebrate the success of their harvest. People prepare a variety of sweets and dishes, such as Pithas, Laroos, Jolpan and many more. The night before bihu is known as Uruka. When people gather around bonfires and have feast together. On the day of Bihu, people wake up early to burn a makeshift house called Meji and Bhelaghor. This is done to pray to the god of fire and seek his blessings for successful harvest next season. It is very joyous occasions that is sure to leave a lasting impression on anyone who experiences it. This festive occasion also serves as a cultural excitement , showcasing Assam’s unique traditions and customs, bringing communities together, and fostering a sense of unity and gratitude for the abundant harvest.

Magh Bihu festival are deeply rooted in Assamese culture. There are three types of Bihu festivals: Bohag Bihu, Magh Bihu, and Kati Bihu. Each holds its significance and is celebrated with unique traditions. Bohag Bihu signifies the new year and seeding time, kati bihu marks the completion of sowing and transplanting of paddies, while Magh Bihu marks the end of the harvesting season.
