Digital Desk, July 15: Sri Lankan Parliament Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeyweardana announced on July 15 that Gotabaya Rajapaksa has resigned. Gotabaya Rajapaksa rose to power in the year 2019. Rajapaksa sent his resignation letter by email from Singapore.
Moreover, Sri Lanka’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that Rajapaksa reached Singapore on Thursday evening. ”He has not asked for asylum and neither has he been granted any asylum.” The leader was forced to quit soon after the protesters stormed his home and office,” the Foreign Ministry further added.
Meanwhile, following former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Gotabaya Rajapaksa would be the last of the Rajapaksas to resign from office. The downturn in Sri Lanka is considered as the worst economic downturn since 1948. The protesters used the slogans including ”Gota go home”. Rajapaksa’s resignation would be regarded as an assertive victory.
