Indian film “Laapata Ladies” for Oscars

Laapata Ladies, the sophomore directorial of Kiran Rao, has been selected  as India’s official submission for the Academy Award for Best International feature film, as declared by Film Federation of India (FFI) on Monday, September 23.

      The film had its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International film festival. In India; it was released in March this year. Based on Biplab Gosami’s prize winning screenplay “Two Brides”, the film stars Sparsh Srivastava, Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta and Ravi Kishan among others.

       This year, a total of 29 films were in the line for Oscar selection. Laapata Ladies was selected by a 13 member committee chaired by Assamese filmmaker Jahnu Barua.

       The film brilliantly portrays the patriarchal society of India. In this comedy-drama satire, one can also see how one woman can be perfectly happy being a homemaker and the other can have dreams to create an identity of her own. This film has connected well with Indian audience; and we hope it will have the same response from the global audience.
