Rohan Bopanna is set to become the world no 1. in men’s doubles in the age of 43,when the ongoing Australian opponents on Sunday . After Mahesh Bhupathi , Leander paes and Sania Mirza, Bopanna is the fourth Indian to be ranked at the helm in doubles tennis. He continues to be the flag-bearer of Indian tennis at the highest stage taking big strides. Bopanna, who turned pro in 2003 and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden now have 7170 points as compared to American Karjicek’s 7160 points.
“It’s been an incredible 20 years of playing this sport, playing these tournaments week-in week-out… Today reaching the World No. 1 ranking is extremely amazing. Proud feeling. Probably hasn’t sunk in fully. Credit to the entire team – family, coach, physio, everyone behind the scenes who play a huge role and always keep me positive,” he said in Melbourne on Wednesday. “Of course my partner Matthew Ebden and these last 13 months have been incredible. Consistent year and I’m proud to be where I am today at the ranking of No. 1.” “I think India needed this, Indian tennis needed this and I’m really happy to be representing India across the world in this tennis journey.
