A 47-year old professor of the Mathematics Department at Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati was found dead inside its residential quarter in Assam’s North Guwahati area on Friday. The deceased was identified as Sameer Kamal, who was found hanging from the ceiling fan inside the quarter, as the Superintendent of Police of Kamrup district Hitesh Roy said on Saturday. The police was informed after complaint of foul smell from his room.
The SP also said that the police suspected that Sameer Kamal allegedly committed suicide two-three days back. The body has been sent to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem.
The authorities of IIT, Guwahati has also issued a statement- “The institute is trying to establish contact with the family of the deceased. IIT, Guwahati expresses its deepest condolences to the family at this time of profound grief.” The authorities also stated that they will cooperate with police investigation and will also commission an internal investigation on the matter.
