4 months time granted to Tamil Nadu State Election Commission by the Supreme Court for Urban local body polls

New Delhi, September 27: Today, the Supreme Court of India has granted a time period of 4 months to the Tamil Nadu State Election Commission to  complete the election process of Urban local bodies in the state against their plea seeking 7 months time to complete the process.
The demand was rejected by a bench of Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, Justice Surya Kant and Justice Hima Kohli.
In regard to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by S Shankar on conducting the local body polls , the TNSEC filed an application in this matter.Appearing for the State Election Commission, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi acknowledged the court that a schedule of 7 Months has been prepared for completion of the polling process as earlier because of Assembly Elections from February to May, the entire workforce was diverted which was followed by the COVI-19 pandemic. So, a time period till April 2022 has been sought by the state poll.
But this demand of theirs has been rejected and the state poll is asked to complete the process within the allotted time period.
